Drive-In Theatres in the Georgia Mountains

There are times when you want to just unwind with a fun movie and some popcorn. Fortunately, the North Georgia mountains have some amazing historic theaters, including 2 of Georgia’s 5 drive-in theatres! Enjoy a first-run film or a campy classic from the comfort of your own car or outside on the lawn.

These outdoor theaters provide a fun and affordable way to enjoy a date or family night. Arrive early to get a great spot and enjoy a picnic and outdoor games while waiting for the movie to start. Additionally, these drive-ins often show a double feature, offering you 2 movies for the price of one!

There has never been a better time to visit a drive-in theater, as these unique destinations have always had more physical distancing built-in to the movie-watching experience than a traditional theater. However, additional precautions are also taken now, including reduced theater capacity, additional bathrooms, and additional wash stations.

Definitely make sure to arrive early, as drive-ins around the country are making headlines for their recent comebacks and surge in popularity (see articles from AJC, CNBC, CNN, and NY Post). Make sure you get a ticket and a great viewing location!

Drive-In Theaters in the North Georgia Mountains

The Georgia mountains are full of great ways to relax, including the old tradition of visiting a drive-in movie theater. While there used to be over 5,000 drive-in theaters around the world, today, only around 300 remain (less than 250 drive-in theaters with digital projection remain in the USA). Fortunately, two drive-ins are located in the Northeast Georgia mountains and make for a great night out!

With the number of drive-in theaters declining, visiting one now is a great idea!

Tips For Enjoying a Drive-In Movie

Watching a movie at a drive-in theater is much like seeing a movie at a traditional theater. For the best experience, arrive early to secure a great parking spot and set yourself up comfortably for watching the movie. You can choose to bring a boombox-type radio and sit outside your car for the movie or stay inside your car and use the car’s FM radio for the movie soundtrack. As capacity has been reduced at theaters, arrive early to ensure you get a parking space!

Pull forward into your space if you are going to watch from the front seat of your car, but back into your space if you’re planning to watch from the bed of a truck or the back of a hatchback.

As the second show often goes late (past bedtimes for kids), do not be surprised to see that many kids opt to wear their PJs to the movie and fall asleep in the car sometime before arriving home.

General Tips for Drive-In Movies

  • Arrive early
    • Ensure you get a ticket (shows have been consistently selling out)
    • Get the best parking space (a shaded area if you arrive early when it’s hot, near the exit if you like to beat the crowds after the movie, get close to the screen for fewer distractions, etc.)
  • Wear comfortable shoes that are suitable for uneven grass, dirt, or gravel pathways (high heels are not a good option)
  • Turn off car lights after dark (both interior and exterior)
  • Plan to turn off your car during the movie – the sound of a running car and the smell of exhaust will distract from the movie
  • Note that it will be hard to see the screen from the backseat of a car — plan to bring lawn chairs or blankets for better viewing outside of the vehicle for backseat car occupants
  • Bring portable radios to listen to movie soundtrack outside of the car
  • Bring flashlights to walk around after dark and/or glow sticks to help identify your party
  • Opt for non-breakable / non-glass items where possible, as it’s very challenging to clean broken glass items from a dark, grassy lawn

If you’re watching from inside your car, you’ll want to ensure that your car is clean and well-maintained:

  • Wash the windshield and windows (take cleaning materials with you to the theater in case your windshield gets dirty en route)
  • Vacuum the seats, floor mats, and floorboards
  • Polish and dust the dashboards, doors, and other surfaces
  • Clear trunk of unnecessary items
  • Make sure the car battery is strong enough to power the radio throughout the show (run the car at intermission if needed, but please keep your headlights off)

If you plan to watch from a larger vehicle (like an SUV with an open hatchback), you may need to park in the back of the lot so that you do not obstruct the view of those behind you. Theater staff may ask you to move if your vehicle blocks the view for others.

What to Take to Drive-In Movie Theaters

A bit of advance planning will help you to enjoy your drive-in experience even more. Be sure to pack these items to ensure the most comfort and best drive-in movie experience possible.

Movie Watching and Pre-Movie Setup

It’s perfectly acceptable to stay inside your car to watch the movie, but you will probably prefer to watch from outside on a nice night. Additionally, people in the backseat will have a better view of the screen outside the car.

Your best bet is to bring a comfy chair for everyone and a multi-purpose table (dinner, snacks, card games, lanterns, centerpieces, etc.) for your night.

Movie Watching Truck / Van / SUV Setup Options

For those driving a truck, van, or SUV to the drive-in, you may wish to clear the back of the vehicle and put down an air mattress for comfy viewing.

Listening to the Movie Soundtrack

You’ll need an FM radio (not internet radio) in order to listen to the FM broadcast of the movie soundtrack. You can use your car radio, but if you’re outside your car, you will do better with a portable radio/boom box.

Snacks and Drinks

You can purchase many local favorites at the on-site concession stands, but you can also bring picnic items to enjoy at Tiger Drive-In. Great for those on strict or picky diets!

  • Snacks
  • Drinks
  • Disposable picnic ware for easy cleanup

Personal Comfort at a Drive-In Movie

Make sure you’re ready for the current outdoor environment at the drive-in. Bring cooling towels and personal fans for the hottest Summer nights. Keep jackets and blankets handy for nighttime chills. A small flashlight for each person in your group can help them navigate to the bathroom/concession stand after dark.

Pre-Movie Entertainment and Games

These fun items will help to make your tailgate and downtime between movies more enjoyable. Classic games like corn hole and ladder toss are great options, or you could also opt for glow-in-the-dark / light-up versions of these games that make it easy to play at any hour!

Note that as there are generally a lot of cars in the area, it’s best to avoid throwing harder objects (like baseballs or softballs) that could get loose and break car windows/lights. Also be extremely careful and always be aware of any cars driving through the area.

Fun Things That Glow

Glow sticks, necklaces, armbands, and toys are a fun treat, and they can also help locate friends and family after dark! Attach a fun glow-stick creation to your car to find it more easily in the dark.

Protection from the Elements

Part of the drive-in fun is the chance to enjoy time outside, but make sure to include protection from the sun, bugs, and other elements.

Cleanup

Keep some cleanup essentials on hand to ensure you’re equipped to handle spills and surprises.

Safety

Finally, it’s always a good idea to have a few safety items on hand in your vehicle. Include a basic first aid kit and these items that can help when your car battery isn’t strong enough to last through the double feature.

***

Enjoy this unique opportunity to combine outdoor time with this classic form of entertainment at North Georgia’s drive-in theaters.

I seem to be getting to know Georgia better than I know my own state. You write so wonderfully that one feels like reading it all. This one for example wasn’t for me really, but I still read through the whole article.

Kudos to you. You should really use these skills further. Write a book or two perhaps.

    Regards,

    Aps

Hi Aps, Thanks for the sweet words about the website and the encouragement to write a book. I hope to get one published soon!

I heard that Drive In’s were coming back so I had to check it out and glad I did. It’s hard to believe drive in’s today are getting sold out when back in the 90’s any left open were struggling to stay afloat. In my area, they had all closed down by the late ’80s. The thing about the movie Need For Speed was cool.

And Tiger Drive-In sounds like they got it together for some time. And they even have campers you can rent out or a site for your own. What a great idea. Good to see them coming back, thanks for the info on Drive In’s.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Rick, It has been nice to see the jump in popularity of drive-in theatres over the past year. I hope that the trend continues!

  3. Sunny says:

Well I would love to have a chance to visit drive-in theaters in Georgia Mountains. That sounds like a lifetime experience indeed. We don’t have drive-in theatres In my country and I believe that we can’t find them anywhere in Europe neither. It’s an American thing. And it’s the best!!! Hopefully, I will try it one day! Thanks 🙂

    • Alyce says:

Hi Sunny, Drive-in theatres certainly provide a unique way to see a movie. There aren’t as many of them around as there used to be, so it’s nice to get a chance to enjoy the ones that are still around!

Hello there, I must say that this is a great information on the topic of drive in theaters in the Georgia mountains. This is indeed a great history in these places that combines nostalgia with modern entertainment options. Anyways I haven’t yet been to the drive in theaters in the Georgia mountains before, but I really think the swan drive in theater in Blue Ridge, Ga is the best option for me. The prices are fair and it’s policies work for me.

  9. ChrisQueen says:

The drive in movie is definitely a great way to enjoy a family evening.  With eleven grandchildren by 3 daughters and the added benefit of one of their gramma’s being part owner of the drive in about 3 miles from our house we go often for bupus per carload.

I’m not even sure anymore what they charge.  The young ones enjoy the playground up near the screen until the movie starts.  I just looked to see what’s playing tonight.

I think this post is great.  It speaks to the changes that have come in our world and might be a look to the future as the crive in is much more pandemic proof than the indoor theater.  Somehow we always enjoy the drive in a lot more that indoors which we rarely do.

I have a cousin who owns an indoor theater in a small town out in the prairie.  Probably been a hard couple of months for him in regard to business.

I like your regional worldview you share with us here.  A very refreshing picture of culture.  Thank you.  Chris

It does make sense to me that drive-in theaters would be a great business to help people get out of the house, yet still maintain some distance in order to comply with social distancing recommendations. It’s an interesting business and it will be interesting to watch and see if this trend sticks around for a while or fades when regular theaters start to open back up again.

Thanks for sharing the details about hours for Tiger Drive-In and the Swan Drive-In. I’m looking forward to going out for a movie on a Saturday night again!

    • Alyce says:

These drive-in theaters have been a part of their North Georgia communities for decades, so it’s great to see that they are getting such strong support as they reopen their doors for business.

I hope you have a great time at the movie.

Hello there! Georgia Drive in theaters are really fun although I’ve only been to the Swan drive in theater, It wasn’t a  disappointing experience one bit. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a place to have fun with their family.

Excellent to hear that you had a great time when you went to the Swan Drive-In Theatre to see a movie. It’s been around for a long time and it’s really nice to know that so many people have fond memories there! Thanks for sharing.

I have only been hearing and reading about drive-in theatres, but haven’t had the opportunity to experience it. From reading your article I have the feeling that the drive-in theatres in the Georgia Mountains could be an amazing experience. The Tiger Drive-in Theatre is especially attractive with modest pricing and provision for camping which is also at a modest cost. I am going to make a plan with a group of friends.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Debbie, This is the perfect activity to enjoy with a group of friends. I hope you all find a great movie to enjoy together at the drive-in!

  13. Sami says:

Reminds me of when we were growing up in the south edge if the “Plains” farming area. We had a drive-in movie theatre.  2 movie theatres in downtown as well.  Many little farm towns had a drive-in theatre.  How ever, changing times involving lifestyle changes and declining population helped the doors close on first on, then many years later, the other.  With the availability of TV with all the movies at our fingertips, it is now too much trouble for most of us to go to the movies in a theatre as we once did.

The addition of the overnight facility for camping was an interesting addition as well.  The vintage RV Camp trailers were fun to see. The movies were a serious business when we were young and everyone planned the weekend around what was showing at the theatres.  Such a carefree time for me.  The food was never the main attraction of my memory.  A cold Dr Pepper or Coca-Cola were our choices. A small box of popcorn.   Maybe there was coffee?  Not important to a teenager.  Different times.  Thank you for the walk back in time. I am sure there will be more fun memories where the area residents have access to a drive-in movie theatre.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Sami, Those sound like wonderful memories.

I’m happy that the Georgia mountains are still able provide a variety of different options for all-ages entertainment. The economy has had it’s ups and downs over the decades, but new agricultural industries (vineyards, orchards, etc) have helped to bring some life into these great small towns and beautiful natural spaces.

Don’t know what to say as I felt a sudden sweep of freshness and serenity. I live in the Middle East and was hoping to visit the US as I’ve been all around to Europe, before spread of covid-19 and the whole world kind of stopped!
I’ve even searched top states to visit in the US, and now I’m impressed with what you’re providing in here. Such a beautiful place and idea. I feel much better now than before reading your blog. I’ve checked some ads of interest as well!

    • Alyce says:

It is a definite challenge to put travel plans on hold for the coronavirus pandemic, but worth it to help flatten the curve and save lives.

I’m so glad that you found your way to Ga Mountains Guide and have found some things of interest to add to your trip itinerary! Let me know if you come up with any questions as you plan your trip to the US. Georgia is a wonderful state to visit and includes cities, rural areas, oceans, and my favorite… the mountains!

  15. Shell says:

I’ve always loved the idea of drive-in movies, even though they have never been as popular in the UK are in the US. I imagine that’s due to our very changeable and often not very pleasant weather! However, with the easing of lockdown initiatives here, I can see a rise in popularity of drive-in cinemas, as people starved for outside entertainment can still get their fix, and at the same time remain at safe social distances.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Shell, These drive-in theaters in the Georgia mountains are fortunate to have weather that is cooperative / good for movies for 3 seasons out of the year. Business has definitely picked up for these theaters as coronavirus concerns are keeping people out of traditional theaters.

  16. Zach says:

Holy cow! we just moved here and we did not know about all these drive-ins and wineries. We are in Lula and can you recommend to us a drive-in around us? We haven’t been to one since we were teenagers and would really love to go to one. We plan on hitting Sweet Acre Farms this weekend do they have wine and cheese tasting? Thanks for a very informational website, we will bookmark yours for our weekend relaxation time.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Zach, Welcome to the area! I hope you’re getting settled in nicely and will enjoy exploring the mountains that are just to the North of you!!

The Tiger Drive-In is located 42 miles from Lula, so it will be the closer of these two drive-ins.

The Swan Drive-In (in Blue Ridge) is located 74 miles from Lula, which would be about an hour and forty minute scenic drive.

I have not been to Sweet Acre Farms in Alto, but their website states that they will be open with regular hours beginning 5/30/2020 with outdoor seating and flights, glasses, bottles, or wine slushies for purchase / tasting.

  17. yawehbass says:

How many drive in theaters are left in Georgia?

    Georgia Drive-in Theaters
Back in the middle of the 1950’s, Georgia hosted about 130 drive-ins at its peak as a drive-in state. But the state was not spared the downward trend and has only 5 drive-ins that remain operational.

What state has the most drive in theaters?

New York (49), Pennsylvania (45), Ohio (44) and California (44) offer the most drive-ins, according to the association. Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Louisiana and North Dakota didn’t have any drive-in theaters as of 2019

    • Alyce says:

Thanks for sharing a little more history about these nostalgic relics still scattered about the US.

Drive-in theaters are a wonderful thing to experience and it’s great to know that they can be found in the Georgia mountains and all around the country!

Hello there thanks for sharing this information about how to get out during social distancing restrictions.  Really cool going through the whole information about drive-in movie theaters in the Northeast Georgia mountains. The Tiger drive in policy seems super cool, I really do want to  visit this place and check out the neat vintage camper setups!

  19. LineCowley says:

Hi Alyce, I didn’t know drive-in theaters still existed, so this is great to see. I grew up in South Africa and we used to go to a drive-in to watch movies, but as suburbia spread and development into the coutryside grew, it died away and houses were built on the land. So this brings back great memories.

We used to have to park in a specific alotted spot next to a metal pole and there would be a speaker attached to the pole. You had to open the window and hang the speaker over the window, facing it inwards so that you could pick up the sound.  It was invariably full of static, but as kids we loved it. Now you just tune into your car radio!

Great to see that these two in Georgia are still operational and you can even camp overnight at Tiger Drive-in. A drive-in theater is something you should sure give a try.

    • Alyce says:

It’s amazing to think of how few drive-in theaters are still open when compared to their peak!

    Hi Alyce,

I enjoyed reading all the practical information you provide in this article. This covid-19 pandemic gives us a perfect reason to go to a drive-in theater. More than ever, planning the experience is important to if we want to get the most out of it. All the details you mention are particularly helpful.

I am from Chicago and had a few opportunities to fly to Atlanta for business before, but never took the time to take a vacation trip to Georgia.  A friend of mine recently moved not far from your beautiful region. When time allows, I will definitely plan a visit.  I have bookmarked your great site as a resource.

question number 3 in which group of movie does this movie belong to. my opinion is to the promoter to keep on pushing.

    • Alyce says:

      Hi loveremma,

      1. The theaters show different movies with different authors, some of which are considered “first run” and only available in theaters
      2. Inspiration and lessons are often found in unexpected places — including movies and blog comments
      3. This group of movies falls into the category of “movies you can watch on a big screen outside in the Georgia mountains”

      Enjoy!

What a great article and perfect timing that might be able to revive outside theatres. This article reminded me of films such as Grease which is my only experience of outside drive ins. We have outside Cinemas in the UK but none where you can drive in so I hope they bring in over here.

I like the link with all the equipment which is something I would use for our outside Cinemas and concerts. Nothing better than an organised picnic with chairs and blankets etc I know full well if I was able to bring the car I would get the back inflatable seat if we had them here.

    Thank you for sharing

    • Alyce says:

Hi Imelda, it’s definitely a great time to consider drive-in movie theaters as a way to support local businesses while still maintaining recommended safe distances from others.

Drive-in theaters are a special treat and likely the safest way to see a movie while practicing the recommended current social distancing protocols. I hope you and your family have a great time at the drive-in!

Hello dear and thanks for sharing the helpful information. This pretty much answers all of the questions that I’ve had about visiting the drive-in theaters. Seems like a great outing to cap a fun day in the Georgia mountains. It’s very helpful to know how busy the drive-ins have been lately. I would not have dreamed that we’d need to arrive so early to secure a space, so this was very helpful to know. I appreciate the top notch content (I already saved the site / page to come back for reference).

With the reduced capacity at the drive-in theaters combined with the closure of other options, the drive-ins have been a very popular choice. It’s a unique experience and as long as you are prepared to hang out at the theater while you wait for the movie to start, you’re certain to have a great time!

Wow, it is certainly a long time since I visited a drive-in theater. I remember doing it often while growing up, but sadly there are very few of these left in South Africa, as most of them have closed down.

I will definitely make a plan to visit one again when I visit the US which will hopefully be in the next two years. I think it must be difficult to compete for these theaters, so the public needs to support them if they don’t want to lose them. What do you think a theater could do that is different to keep customers coming back for more?

    • Alyce says:

Hi Michel, Hmm, what could a theater do that is unique?? The drive-in experience is already a little more intense than a standard theater, but it’s smart for them to still work on staying innovative. It’s not uncommon for people to dress up as characters from the movie or deck themselves out with dazzling glow sticks. This often happens organically at a drive-in, but might be even more fun if a dress-up event was promoted by the theater too!
