North Georgia Visitor Policies During COVID-19 Coronavius Pandemic

While the Georgia mountains are an amazing place to relax and enjoy nature, many of these outdoor areas are being temporarily closed in an effort to reduce congregations of people and slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

As conditions seem to be changing daily, it’s best to check the most direct source for information about any destinations that you may want to visit.

NOTICE: 4/1/2020 – Governor Kemp issues a shelter-in-place order for the entire state of Georgia that will last from April 6th through April 13th. All K-12 public schools have also been cancelled for the rest of the academic year. This statewide order for Georgia supersedes all local ordinances. Note that when the statewide order expires (currently scheduled to go through April 13th) the local restrictions will apply.

Many municipalities have issued shelter-in-place or stay-at-home orders, while other towns without official orders to close have seen that businesses are either limiting customers, limiting their hours of operation, or closing altogether. This is likely to continue for weeks, perhaps even for months. Additionally, many parks and hiking trails have been closed and officers are towing any cars parked at these parks or near trailheads including Yonah Mountain.

Statewide Guidelines for Georgia

The following resources and information apply to all Georgians and current visitors. Please follow local laws and recommendations from trusted sources of public health information.

Enjoying Nature Amid Physical Distancing Guidelines

At the current moment, the North Georgia mountains are experiencing some of the best weather of the year. This naturally draws more visitors, as people are drawn to the warmer weather and Spring blooms. However, now that this is combined with limited entertainment options elsewhere, there are record numbers of people showing up at parks and trails that are usually not too crowded. Parking lots are overflowing at multiple parks and illegally parked cars are being towed. There are so many people on these trails that it is practically impossible to maintain a physical distance of 6 feet from others on these trails.

I definitely get it. It’s beautiful outside right now, and it’s gorgeous in the Georgia mountains. The air smells great and the scenery can’t be beat. However, given that there are too many of us trying to crowd these gems at once, we should strongly consider being responsible and staying at home until the COVID-19 coronavirus threat has passed.

Turkey Hunting Season 2020 (March 21 – May 15)

Be Alert! Turkey hunting season has just started in Georgia and will continue through May 15, 2020. Check the Georgia DNR website to see the dates for other upcoming hunting seasons.

Hikers that are new to the area should make certain they are hiking on a trail or on property where they are expressly allowed, and to also be sure to make themselves extra visible when they may be hiking close to places where hunters are present. I have read of 2 close encounters just this week where a family of hikers have stumbled across an active hunting area without realizing that they could be in danger.

For extra safety and precaution, consider outfitting your hiking party with high-visibility clothing so that everyone in your party is clearly seen on all trails.

National Parks & Forest Sites in the Georgia Mountains

From a quick glance, it appears that all of the recreational areas are currently closed. Please pay attention to these closures and know that rangers are enforcing the closures.

Even the multi-state Appalachian Trail is not immune to this threat. Believe it or not, the popularity of trails like the AT have surged in recent weeks and, “Hiking the A.T. has become… the opposite of social distancing.”  Note that the ATC states:

We cannot close the Trail. We cannot physically bar access to trailheads or connecting trails. We can and do, however, urge everyone to please stay away from the Appalachian Trail until further notice.

Although the trail is not physically closed, the National Park Service has closed all overnight shelters and privies on land administered by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail Park Office. Learn about these and more closures at wildeast.appalachiantrail.org. Other online resources include:

Georgia State Parks

The Georgia state parks around the state are open (as of 3/27/2020), but with limited accessibility. In order to maintain social distancing, some activities may not be available.

All Georgia State Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites’ visitor centers, museums, golf pro shops, and nature centers are now restricting access to comply with the Governor’s directive to reduce gatherings to 10 people or less while maintaining social distance. Staff still remain on site and available via phone and email to assist visitors with their needs.

Check the Georgia State Parks website for current alerts about Georgia’s state parks and news updates.

Things to Do While You #StayAtHome

There are many ways to enjoy the extra free time you may have (no long commutes through rush-hour traffic) and nice weather (hello Spring!) while following the WHO and CDC guidelines for #PhysicalDistancing.

Many of us have the room to do the following activities while staying at home. A few supplies that can be ordered online can add a lot of extra opportunities for enrichment at home.

Solo Pursuits

Whether you are staying at home by yourself, or if you just want to pursue something on your own, consider these items that can sharpen your mind, dexterity, and strength.

Explore Your Environment

The right tools can make all the difference — including in what we’re able to see! A simple pair of binoculars or a telescope can open up the immediate world to all sorts of sights that we don’t normally see. Grab a pair of binoculars and see how many types of wildlife that you can spot outside your windows during daylight hours (we’ve seen deer, songbirds, squirrels, and birds of prey in the past month). A pair of night vision goggles can bring a nighttime environment into a whole new light (be prepared to spend a lot to get a quality set with the latest technology). And a quality telescope can bring the planets and stars to life right before your eyes.

Physical Activities & Challenges

Depending on the size and layout of your home / yard, you may find that these challenging items are a fun way to build strength. These balance boards are irresistible fun for both kids and adults at our house.

With a couple of large trees that are a good width apart (or I’ve even seen some people set them up on large beams inside their lofts…), kids and adults alike can enjoy a challenging day of balancing themselves on easy to set-up slacklines and ninja lines (similar concept but with obstacles to navigate).

You can create lots of different games with a small amount of sidewalk or driveway space and some sidewalk chalk. Use the chalk to create artful designs or play classic games like hopscotch, tic tac toe, checkers, and more!

Play classic outdoor games with a kit that you either build yourself or a pre-made version online. Enjoy cornhole, lawn darts, tiki toss, and ladder toss games with one or more people that you are self-quarantined with.

Physical Fitness & Exercise

There are a lot of ways to exercise at home including video instruction and home fitness machines. If you’ve got room for a machine or gym, then you can create a lot of different workout options like cross country skiing, walking / running, biking, rowing, and much more!

Learn New Skills

There are countless skills out there to learn with your extra time. Consider your interests and find online tutorials, guides, and enthusiast groups to help you hone in on a new talent. You may want to learn magic tricks, juggling, new languages, pancake flipping, or handstands and high-kicks. Or you may want to practice practical outdoor skills like archery, knot tying, or compass and star / celestial navigation. Let your imagination run wild and start mastering something new today.

Read a Great Book (or Magazine)

There has never been a better time to try out Kindle e-readers or an Audible subscription. An e-reader like a kindle allows you to downloads thousands of books or magazines without the need to visit a store. An additional Kindle Unlimited subscription includes access to thousands of the newest releases each month! Combine with an Audible subscription and you can even enjoy your favorite books during your commute, while walking the dog, or even while taking a shower.

Take an Online Class

The popularity of online learning has skyrocketed in the past 2 weeks as students around the globe have moved from physical classrooms to logging in for “live classes” from home. You can also get it to online learning with classes available from a variety of great sources. Coursera is currently offering their popular class on The Science of Well-Being offered by Yale University for FREE (10 million recent views!). SkillShare is offering 2 free months of Skillshare Premium where you can take any of their classes on business, technical skills, lifestyle, and more!

Play Games with Family or Online

A simple deck of cards can provide entertainment in many forms and is perfect for those with limited space. Play a game of solitaire by yourself, or challenge those staying at home with you to a game of poker, spades, or blackjack. Try out new games that have recently become popular like the R-rated Cards Against Humanity. Or keep your friendly rivalries healthy during quarantines and log on to playingcards.io to play with far-away friends!

Enjoy thrilling competitions with these exciting and different games that are sure to be remembered.

Support Georgia Mountain Businesses

Many tough decisions have had to be made by the small businesses that bring such charm, love, and life to the Georgia mountains. We are all experiencing new challenges due to the realities of fighting the public health hazards of the COVID-19 coronavirus. However, where possible to responsibly do so, it is extremely helpful to these local businesses if you are still actively able to support them. Here are some of the places where you can either order online, join a club / become a member, make a future reservation, or some other type of contribution.

What ways are you and your family dealing with the lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic?

Here in Canada, the most hit provinces are Ontario and Quebec. I am in Alberta and we are not hit as hard as the other part of Canada I mentioned above. Most business were totally or partially closed including churches sadly. I miss being at church and it is the only thing I have missed for a while. Hopefully, everything will come to normal soon. Regarding exercises, I like jogging and walking. There are the things that keep me stay fit and they are totally free lol. Looking to invest on some exercise equipment for winter season here though. This might be a great site for me to revisit.

    • Alyce says:

Hello and thanks for checking in from Canada! This pandemic has touched everyone’s life in ways both large and small, no matter where we are in the world. Taking a walk or a hike in the woods is a big attraction in the Georgia mountains — it’s great, cheap exercise, with beautiful scenery all around.

I also prefer to get outside to exercise when the weather is nice, but if you are looking for a great piece of indoor exercise equipment too, I highly recommend the NordicTrack Pro Skier!

  2. Peter hanley says:

As I am writing from Australia i am hoping for your Parks to reopen and be Covid-19 free as soon as possible.
Exercise is really important during any period of restraint  and there is none better than the trails and treks through wilderness areas. Naturally spacing must be applied and no big groups but lone or pair walkers should not present a problem. Your page is full of material and opportunities to purchase associated products ideal for those wanting to lace up the boots.

    • Alyce says:

Thanks Peter, it’s definitely a challenge to balance individual desires with the best interests of the community as a whole. Fortunately the towns in the North Georgia mountains are small in size and the surrounding areas of nature are big and wide. This means that there are plenty of places for people to get outside an enjoy the fresh mountain air without needing to travel far.

It’s still recommended to maintain social distancing as the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet behind us.

Hope you and yours are well in Austrailia!

  3. PrettySophia says:

While most of metro Atlanta has been sheltering in place or enduring curfews due to the corona-virus pandemic, those in the North Georgia mountains have been enjoying the beginning of spring.Recently the medical authorities has recorded 10 new cases across nine northeastern Georgia mountain countries,so there are lot of policies now that we all in Georgia have to follow to survive this pandemic

    • Alyce says:

As of the statewide shelter-in-place order, all of North Georgia is in this together with the rest of the state. Hopefully the social distancing measures help to flatten the curve and keep more people healthy.

  4. Darren says:

Sadly practicing social distancing is easier said than done which I have experienced the same problems as the North Georgia Mountain Centre just at the supermarket!

So many people have the same idea to go somewhere like the visitors center on a nice day instead of staying at home and this is just a similar scenario in parks as well.

are the numbers they allow in restricted at the moment?

I like the fact you have given people ideas as to what to do while staying at home at this trying time. I especially think the wine will be a good seller!!!

    • Alyce says:

Some places remain open to individuals but social distancing is encouraged. There are some places that are towing cars that are parked illegally, so the open places are limited in the sense that they only have a limited amount of parking available.

  5. Justin says:

Hey I like this idea:  keeping people abreast of the covid19 situation in the North Georgia area.

I know when the virus first got crankin I was like, what am I supposed to do?

It would have been nice to have a guide like this.

I’m in the North Carolina area, but actually it’s beautiful here to with springtime getting under way.

Thanks for a great idea of keeping people informed on this corona issue during these crazy times!

    • Alyce says:

It’s been a pretty wild ride with a wildly different response depending on your local government. Right now, the statewide stay at home order is in effect everywhere and goes through April 30th. We’ll have to check back in with the government to see what happens after that.

  6. Don says:

Nice article combining the pandemic information with the Georgia information. It is past the 13th so did Gov. Kemp ever stop the Say In Place order or did he extend it? Georgia is a beautiful state and it is a sin for folks to not be able to enjoy it. There was a lot of good information here and I especially like the How to Get Outside infographic. Nice job

  7. Micheal N says:

You are a good steward. You have created a guide for the everyone visiting the mountains and what they would need to stay safe. I don’t live in Georgia and because of the lock down in my country, I am not planning to visit soon but this guide is handy. I feel it is a must have.

The part of what to do as you stay home is what I identify with. Home is more boring than I thought it was. I really fill these will spice my stay at home during this time. Thank you very much.

    • Alyce says:

Hopefully you have found some interesting activities that you can learn more about and practice from home. Every environment is a bit different so I hope you have found something suitable for your area!

  8. Alexy says:

This is an informative details, we really need this at this point, we are also on lock-down, shops closed and street dry, no one can come out side, the fear alone is quite over whelming, the COVID-19 is really taking a tour in the our countries but we need to stay safe and save our countries. The North Georgia mountain looks nice according to these pictures, looking forward to a future visit. Thanks for this article and stay safe.

    • Alyce says:

Thanks Alexy, it’s definitely important for us to shelter at home right now to fight the pandemic and save lives.

  9. Dave says:

Great info!  Just yesterday I was looking into info about Yellowstone national park to see if there has been any tremors and to set if they are increasing. But upon doing so, it informed about how the park was closed.  A lot of people mix up what’s opened and closed.  Your site is what we need more of.. Thanks again and great job!

    • Alyce says:

It’s been a confusing ride everywhere, but definitely so in the state of Georgia where the city and state governments are not always aligned. For now, the statewide shelter-at-home order is effective throughout Georgia through Friday, April 10th. After that, either the statewide order may be extended, or people will need to look to their local leaders for current policies.

  10. wilson kume says:

Nice post on the mountains of Georgia policies.. Georgia mountains are an amazing place to relax and enjoy nature, but many of these outdoor areas are being temporarily closed for our own good in an effort to reduce congregations of people and slow the spread of the COVID 19 Corona virus pandemic. So I’d want to adhere to the new policies made for my own good. Thanks for the enlightenment.

    • Alyce says:

There have been a patchwork of policies to date, but currently the statewide stay-at-home order supercedes all local ordinances. This has meant that some additional areas must be closed, but also that some places were reopened after local authorities had closed them (see this article about Tybee Island beaches reopening among the pandemic). It’s been a crazy thing to navigate!

  11. Laura says:

OH My Gosh, I love your article. I never even considered the parks would close. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me because I live in Florida and the beaches closed. It is by far so necessary to stay safe and distance.

But as I read on I found a few things that can occupy my time. I like the binocular idea and will get a pair. Now you said to watch nature. But how about spying on the neighbors. NOT, I am just kidding.

And as for learning a new skill, I need to learn Spanish. Now is the perfect time for me to do that. Thanks for the reminder.

And I think I will finish my course on DNA. I had forgotten all about that one.

But when this is all over, I am going to take a look at going to the Georgia mountains. They look heavenly.

Thank you so much for this information. You have made my day.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Laura, Thanks so much for sharing!

We always enjoy our set of binoculars at this time of year — there is a lot more nature out and about and it’s great to be able to get a closer look without disturbing the wildlife (or neighbors — LOL!!). 😉

I hope you do get to visit when the COVID-19 threat has passed — the GA mountains are probably some of the closest mountains to you in Florida and would make for a great vacation to escape the Florida heat!!

  12. ChrisQueen says:

Awesome. Entices one to plan a vacation to the North Georgia Mountains.  Your site offers scads of valuable content for your readers.  I navigated the top menu and looked through the offers there.  The image on the front grabbed my attention and held it until I opened it and looked.

The restarants and attractions as I move through the tabs kept making me want to investigate your site.  I did so and was even disappointed when I finally got to the bottom and saw the notice that all the recreational sites were closed on one of the pages.

Your site offers much for you readers and the layout etc is artwork.  Than You.  CQ

    • Alyce says:

Hi CQ, Thanks for visiting Ga Mountains Guide and browsing the website! Unfortunately, you are correct that many recreational are currently closed. However, you should also know that these are temporary measures to help reduce the likelihood of large crowds gathering and spreading the COVID-19 coronavirus.

The Georgia mountains will reopen for residents and travelers again when the pandemic threat has passed. Until then, be well and enjoy the planning stage of your next vacation!

  13. Eric says:

This is pretty in-depth on what’s happening on that side of the world. We in Canada are in lockdown as well. COVID-19 seems to have crippled the world at this time. My wife has a comprised immune system so we are all staying home, just so she doesn’t get anything.

It’s been maddening to tell you the truth. What we are doing right now is playing board games, sometimes my wife and I go for a long drive. All of our kids have their own vehicles and do the same thing. Since we live on a 10-acre farm, we are going for long walks around the farm.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Eric, Thanks so much for #StayingAtHome during the COVID-19 pandemic — it’s critical to helping to protect those like your wife with compromised immune systems, and for the rest of us as well. You are fortunate to have a nice big space to walk — there are a lot of people who wish for the same right now and a big reason that so many trails in our area have seen record crowds.

  14. Md. Asraful Islam says:

Thank you so much for sharing with us a timely article. The essence of this article is that North Georgia Mountain was shut down because of COVID 19.  It is truly remarkable how well you feature the content of your article. What I like best about your article is that one of the ways that people who are traveling around the country during this epidemic will do so now.

I am also a traveler so I am currently living in my own home so I can spend my time doing online classes. From where I am learning new techniques for climbing the mountain and increasing my physical ability through physical exercise.

    • Alyce says:

The North Georgia mountains have received a lot of visitors in the past couple of weeks who were likely hoping to escape the crowds and stay in the more isolated areas of these smaller communities. Unfortunately, it appears that too many people had the same idea and the usually quiet areas quickly became filled with more people than the facilities could handle. It’s unfortunate that so many beautiful places must be off limits for a while.

However, it’s great to hear that you are able to keep up with your climbing techniques during the shelter at home orders!

  15. Ann says:

It’s good to read these policies before hand. It’s good we can still visit some of these places, with caution, but we can still enjoy them.

Thank you for the reminder that Turkey hunting season is here and it will last until May 15th. I’ll share this with my husband to see if he get’s excited about the idea.

    • Alyce says:

There are still places that are open to provide critical services, but note that Gov. Kemp has ordered Georgians to remain in their homes for all but essential outings, “such as to buy food or medicine, to work in critical jobs or to exercise in solitude outdoors” through April 13.

  16. Shanta Rahman says:

Thank you so much for giving us this wonderful article. Your article is really very informative and I have gained a lot of knowledge which is very helpful to me .At present the coronavirus is in serious shape all over the world and my friend lives in North Georgia .And at this time, you must be appreciative of the advice you receive at home to perform the tasks they need to do. Through your articles I have found many tips that are very useful to me .

I will definitely be delivering your article to my friend and she will definitely share with you her new experience .Can I share your article on my social media?

    • Alyce says:

Yes Shanta, You may definitely share the article. Thank you so much for helping to get the word out so that people can follow these new guidelines to help #FlattenTheCurve and slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

  17. Antonio says:

    Hi

I know it is a difficult time for many and I know people are going stir crazy. In order to reduce transmission  rates you have to keep your distance and keep your exposure to  a minimum.  You think by visiting the mountains and exercise you are doing your best, but you are not as this could be the worse thing you can do. It is best to ride the waves and wait until the coronavirus  had passed away. It is better to stay home and look to developing new hobbies and things to do  it is better to visit the mountains when you know that you will be safe and sound. This is why duty and patience comes into play.

How long do you think that the parks will be close, as I cannot imagine it will change in the near future?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • Alyce says:

Hi Antonio, Most of the schools in the state are closed until at least April 27th, but this date could obviously change if needed. I expect that there park closures will coincide with school closures, so it’s going to be at least a month before we’re allowed to enjoy the beautiful parks again.

  18. Fiona says:

Thank you for sharing this wonderful informative article about North Georgia mountains visitor policies during Covid- 19 Coronavirus pandemic. I enjoyed reading your article a lot, it is detailed on visitors policies during this pandemic. l liked the things to do at home due to lock down here in South Africa luckily l have a big yard with swings for kids and green grass we do exercises and we run around the yard. Hopeful everyone will stay fit and healthy during this time. I like the quality of your article it is amazing. I have bookmarked your article so that l can go back there is a lot of useful information l will also share it with my friends. Great post.

    Wishing you all the success!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Fiona, It sounds like across the world we are all sharing a similar experience of staying at home in order to save lives. It’s an interesting time for us all, as we realize that even without symptoms, we could be infecting others.

It’s just smart to stay at home right now, and great that we can share ideas with each other on how to make the most out of our time at home.

  19. Ashton says:

This is one of the most informative articles I have read on this subject. I really liked all your ideas about what people can do instead of going out. It seems many wish they had more time to be in nature. Now that they have the time they are taking the risk. Another very cool inside idea could be to make a bucket list of nature ventures for after the Quarantine. Think about some realistic goals they can make a priority- now that you truly feel what you have been missing its time to get ready to be more appreciative of Nature when we can go out and fully enjoy these parks again!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Ashton, I like the idea of revisiting your personal bucket list. There are a lot of amazing places in the world and hopefully it won’t be too long before it’s safe to visit them again.

  20. robertmccarty says:

Great local info on the current status of the Georgia parks and public access.  This Covid19 stuff can be confusing and you are right the 6 foot distance is a bit tough on these hiking trails and walking paths.  I certainly would be concerned about turkey shooting and getting shot if someone is not careful in those designated areas.  All the information on this is super helpful and critical to our health!  Thanks for the update!

  21. Courtney says:

A nice site that explains well of the closure of parks and trails. I really like your things to do at home section of your site. I can watch bird wildlife by my house and do other activities with my kids. And I can do exercises as we all wait for this covid-19 crisis to pass. And most businesses have an online presence so it is easy to purchase items fro online stores. Interesting and helpful article you have written. Thanks for sharing.

    Courtney-

    • Alyce says:

Thank you Courtney. Watching wildlife is always relaxing. We also put up a bird feeder at our house and we were so surprised at how close we could be to the birds while they ate!

  22. Benny says:

An article of this quality takes a lot of time and energy to develop especially when it has to reach out to people with useful information. i also commend the beautiful website that you have created with nice templates. the effect of covid 19 on the world today has caused so many restrictions. thank you for the information.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Benny, There are currently a lot of different policies with regards to “stay-at-home” or “shelter-in-place” orders across the Georgia mountains. Hopefully these links will help people to understand what they should expect in each community.

  23. Harish says:

Hello, Your guide is very useful for every traveler like me. Now a days everyone is staying at home to fight corona virus. Thanks for sharing your lovely and helpful tips for everyone. I also learn new skill to take my business on top by implement some traffic methods. I hope everyone will stay fit and healthy buy following your lovely guide and develop new skill also like me. Keep this grate work up for everyone.

While it’s not a fun thing to do, the need for everyone to stay home while the COVID-19 coronavirus passes is temporary. It’s hard to stay home when the weather is so beautiful, but it’s a necessary step to help save lives in our communities.

Thanks, this post has a lot of helpful information and answers to questions I’ve had lately. It’s helpful to know where to check on the status of parks, trails, and other places, and also especially helpful to offer some suggestions of stuff to do at home.  I’d love to be able to have that Ninja obstacle course but I don’t have the room.  Having read your post I am going to check out Audible, as I read a lot but it’s good to have an alternative.  In fact, I could exercise while listening to an Audible book, what do you think?

P.S. I’ve always wanted to do the AT, fingers crossed I can still check it out in the future.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Louise, I’m sure that hiking the AT will be back in business when the pandemic threat has passed. Keep that dream alive and start your planning and prepping while you wait on the facilities to re-open.

Audible is a great way to enjoy quality content when you can’t physically focus on a book. A lot of people definitely enjoy their workouts a lot more with a great book to keep them entertained!
