The Ultimate Guide to the Georgia Wine Highway

As a Canadian, I know there are a few states that are known for their vineyards and wineries, with California being the top choice.  I would never think Georgia as a wine state on top of their peaches, but with the wide selection of vineyards during the Annual Georgia Wine Highway Event, it shows how serious wine is in Georgia.

With that, the annual event looks like it would be enjoyable for anyone of age to enjoy the wine.  It seems like the best option for those who have never experienced a wine tasting before.  Sometimes seeing all the options of wine can be overwhelming, so to have someone guide you through the process will ease any novice’s nerves.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Jeremy, even locally in Georgia, many people are surprised at how much the wine industry has grown over the past decade! The GA Wine Highway is both a great deal for wine lovers AND a great way to learn about these local treasures first-hand.

  2. Carrie says:

Good Afternoon, Do you have any suggestions for transportation? Group transportation or private when visiting several vineyards? Thank you and looking forward to this event!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Carrie, Visiting these wineries does require traveling to rural locations that don’t usually have reliable taxi or ride-share services, so it is a great idea to plan for this in advance! Several companies offer transportation for Georgia wine country tours. Check the Open Georgia Wine website at opengeorgiawine.com for their official list of “transportation” partners who should be familiar with the Georgia wine highway event.
      Enjoy!

  3. Whitney says:

Is Tiger Mountain Vineyards on the list for 2023? I see it on the map, but not on the list on their website.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Whitney, Tiger Mountain Vineyards has not participated in the Ga Wine Highway in the past few years, but I’m not yet sure whether they will be a part of the 2023 event. I do not think that the website map or list is finalized yet. Hopefully, the details will be available soon!

    • Alyce says:

Hi again! I just wanted to share a quick follow-up now that the list of wineries is finalized. Tiger Mountain Vineyards is not participating in the 2023 Ga Wine Highway, but you are welcome to visit them any time during their regular hours. Cheers!

  4. Mazie Dixon says:

Thanks for the 2023 wine highway update! I’m excited to learn that the annual Georgia wine highway will happen again in March this year. You have provided a wealth of helpful information on the Georgia Wine Highway over the past few years and I’ll be following you again for this year’s updates as well. Cheers!

    • Alyce says:

Cheers, Mazie! Georgia’s wine highway event is definitely one of the most anticipated events of the year. It’s so fun to visit the wineries, and I’m always impressed with the great wines that are produced so close to home!

  5. Debra S Hollingsworth says:

Does anyone here know if the wine highway event is happening again for the month of March 2023?

    • Alyce says:

Happy New Year, Debra! Just wanted to let you know that the Georgia Wine Highway will happen during the entire month of March 2023. Cheers!

  6. jobs says:

I am from Spain and had always used Spanish wine but not in my dreams had it crossed to think of wine coming from Georgia and an interesting context like Georgia wine highway. Is the participation restricted or open to all including people outside the US? Thanks for the article .

    • Alyce says:

Hello! Most of the vineyards in Georgia are fairly new (less than 20 years old), with only a few exceptions. For that reason, it’s understandable that many people aren’t yet aware of the great wines produced locally!

The GA Wine Hwy gives everyone (ages 21+) the opportunity to visit the 40 participating Georgia wineries and sample the wines for the one-time cost of $75. It’s a great deal and always the perfect excuse to travel around the scenic parts of the state!! Enjoy!

  7. Jerry McCoy says:

I am glad to see the wineries of North Georgia have found an alternative to their previous scheduling. This 30 day event should be more exciting for all who participate. This gives visitors a longer date to enjoy the vineyards and will also allow people to enjoy the spring conditions in Georgia. It will certainly make for a great time if some of the visitors decide to take advantage of some of the campsites available.

    Jerry

  8. Edwin Bernard says:

You’ve provided a wealth of information about the Georgia Wine Industry via this Passport Program. I never thought about Georgia having a wine industry before. Thanks for sharing this information.

I imagine there are many more States that have a Wine Industry, besides the well-known California one.

How will the deep cold weather now affect the wine harvest later in the year? Hopefully not much.

    Cheers.

    Edwin

    • Alyce says:

Hi Edwin, The weather is carefully watched and the vines are protected from extreme temperatures as much as possible. Georgia has many fantastic wines and the annual wine highway offers an affordable way to sample some of the best!

  9. chinthaka says:

I loved reading this article a lot. I really like this concept. As a person from another part of the world, your article was really eye-catching for me. So my question is a simple one. Is there any possibility for me to have a little experience with wine through online purchasing, I hope it will be a nice experience for me.

    thanks for sharing.

    • Alyce says:

Hello, wines can be shipped from Georgia to many places around the world, so hopefully, you live in an area where this will be available to you. Cheers!

  10. Jenni Elliott says:

I loved reading about the annual Georgia Wine Highway Event and am extremely sad that I will not be able to go in 2022. I’m directing a play for our local community theater and will be in the midst of rehearsals in March. I am a wine lover and like nothing more that to cruise around good wineries tasting their wares. I will try to avoid any theater activities in 2023 so that maybe we can go to the next event.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Jenni, the GA wine highway is a great way to sample wines from lots of Georgia’s wineries, but even if you can’t make it during March for the wine highway event, the wineries stay open all year!

Best of luck to you with the theater production!

  11. Sean says:

I found this post to be very informative, very well laid out, and easy to navigate. I like that it offers the price per passport for the event. The downloadable maps are nice as well. I have a couple of friends that like wine and traveling, I’m going to pass this on to them. My partner likes wine and travel too. We may have to make plans for 2023. I’m glad I ran across this.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Sean, the wine highway is a really nice way to get to know the great wines and wineries here in Georgia. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Jannette says:

I have traveled to different wineries in other states but never one in my home state of Georgia. Did not know about the Georgia Wine Highway until now. Now that is moved to last a month and in the summer, am going to have to plan a visit to experience the Wine highway this year. Going to share with my twin in Florida as well, she likes to keep a large supply on hand of different wines to entertain her home guests.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Jannette, the Georgia wine highway does last for a month, but after 2 years of holding it in August, it is moving back to a Springtime event and happening during the month of March 2022. No worries though — there is still plenty of time to plan your trips! 🙂

  13. Tim says:

This is a beautiful overview of The Annual Georgia Wine Highway Event.  Thanks for reviewing previous events and actions that was necessary to take doing the pandemic for the safety of the event goers.  Thank you for the details of this event, for which is inviting for a date with my spouse and I.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Tim, It’s a great event for couples – maybe we’ll see you at one of the wineries for the 2022 wine highway! Cheers!

  14. Kokontala says:

    Good day Alyce,

Well, I must say this is very well presented and organized. It’s detailed but easy to navigate and has the best readability. I will definitely be able to use the printable map as I go from winery to winery!

This 2021 Georgia Wine Highway background is interesting too – it’s fascinating how local wineries made adjustments to provide a safer environment for guests by making the event last an entire month. It’s great that each winery provides its own wine tasting format. Offering complimentary food and music is awesome and a nice touch.

    Best wishes!

    • Alyce says:

Thanks so much! There is definitely a lot of excitement building for the month-long Ga Wine Highway!!

      Cheers!

  15. Tina Witbracht says:

I am so happy to see the full list of participating wineries is out. When I click on the map there are wineries with a purple marker around the Cleveland area that are not listed below the map. Could please confirm if the wineries on the map are participating? Thank you!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Tina, The map is accurate and the list will be updated by the end of the day. Thanks for your patience as I pull all the info together!

  16. Vanabell says:

Hi there! Thanks for sharing this.. I have been hearing about this more and more these past few days. Please I’m a lil embarrassed to this tho. but can Someone just help me out with a run down of what The Georgia  wine highway event really is about? Is it a sorta submit? or just fun fair recreation event?

    • Alyce says:

Hi Vanabell, The annual Georgia Wine Highway Event is a way to showcase the vineyards and wineries in the state of Georgia. It allows people to buy a “wine passport” that includes a glass and free wine tastings at all of the participating vineyards. The event happens throughout the entire month of August to allow people plenty of time to visit the vineyards!

    • JACQUELINE HART says:

My sister and friends have been doing this event for over 3 years now. It is awesome. But.. some preplanning goes a long way. We work but have managed to get a lot in over a weekend. We stay at one location on Friday night, get up Saturday and do about 4 to 5 wineries, then we have a second location for Saturday night that is near the last winery we went to on Saturday. Get up Sunday and we hit a few more wineries before heading home. We also pack a cooler with waters and some “tray” snacks or pinwheel sandwiches since not all places have a lunch stop and it is not always easy to find a restaurant.
For places to stay, there are always AirBB’s, cabins etc you can find. We even pack something simple like spaghetti and meatballs to cook when we get to our cabin at night. (of course we open a wine we got that day too). If you are prepared, you will have a blast and never want to miss another Wine Highway.

  17. Mike says:

Hello there! This is an informative post! I am actually just up in North Carolina so Georgia is not too far. I feel like I live under a rock so I have no idea all the opportunities and events that one can take part in. That’s really cool that this Wine Highway event is a month long which will give people plenty of time to take off from work and plan ahead for this event. Thanks for bringing this event up.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Mike, A couple of the North Georgia vineyards are very close to North Carolina (Crane Creek Vineyards and 12 Spies Vineyards), so this could definitely provide some fun outings for you and your crew! Cheers!!

  18. MARIA says:

Can’t wait to participate this year!! North Georgia has such hidden gems!! Love the small personalized wineries.

  19. Aparna says:

Georgia Wine Highway sounds like a fun event.

Do you mean these events are still on? I wonder if they will be able to take place. With COVID and all that’s not well with the world.

Lovely article though. i enjoyed reading it. And for your sake, I hope things sort themselves out soon, and the world can get back to how it was.

    Regards,

    AB

    • Alyce says:

Hi Aparna, The Georgia Wine Highway is ready to proceed with the 2021 event in August. The event used to only last for 10 days, but due to social distancing concerns, now runs for the full month of August! This allows people plenty of time to visit the wineries and to make sure that there aren’t too many crowds packed into a short time span.

  20. Leahrae says:

The Ga wine highway event sounds like a lot of fun!  I like the map of the different wineries.  Because I can obviously not go to them all.  What’s a bummer is that they are all up north.  I live in Florida, so it would be a road trip for sure.  Would you recommend flying in anywhere and then going from there?

    • Alyce says:

Hi Leahrae, This will be the first year that there will be wineries from all over the state participating in the Georgia Wine Highway (previously the wineries were all located in the North part of the state). Stay tuned and follow for more details about which wineries will be participating in 2021. You will have the entire month of August to visit all of your favorites!

There are a lot of direct flights to Atlanta from Florida, and the mountain wineries would be about a couple of hours’ drive from the airport. I hope that helps with your trip planning!

  21. bethebest#128 says:

I think that you are providing some very practical, kind tips on how to prepare for wine tasting in Georgia before and during the event. I love how you exed out some of the dates and explained why. Your post is very organized and structured to an effective, economic extent.

I was very impressed by how well you conveyed the content in your post. I even subscribed to your site because I want to know more tidbits about what to expect about vineyards.

  22. Leahrae says:

Looks fun!  I live in Florida and a little road trip to enjoy the Georgia Mountains Wine Highway Week would be so much fun.  Looks like there is still plenty open even with COVID.  I could use a change of scenery and what is not to like about wine tasting 🙂  I would obviously head to the ones that are closest to Florida.  Thanks for the great information.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Leahrae, there is some chatter online that looks like planners are hoping to have the Georgia Mountians 2021 Wine Highway week during the month of August (like they did in 2020). There is no official word on this yet, but stay tuned and hopefully there will be some concrete details soon!

  23. Jacqueline Hewitt says:

When is wine week for 2021? I really want to go but need to make reservations asap! Thanks!

    • Carol Taylor says:

      When is the 2021 highway?

      • Alyce says:

Hi ladies! I am also eagerly awaiting this news, but I have not yet been able to learn any dates for the 2021 Georgia Wine Highway. In previous years it would run for 10 days in late March, but given the current pandemic restrictions, I would not count on anything being on a normal schedule this year.

Most of the North Georgia vineyards are open year-round, so you are welcome to plan a wine country vacation that could include multiple vineyards at any time of the year.

Stay tuned for the updates on the 2021 Georgia Wine Highway — hopefully the details will be announced soon!

      • Alyce says:

Hi ladies, The event will be the entire month of August in 2021. More details will be shared as they become available. Cheers!

  24. Kelly Pierce says:

This is such a great event- does it normally occur once a year? This would also be wonderful in the Fall, if it doesn’t already.
    Thanks!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Kelly, this is definitely a great way to get to know the wineries and vineyards in the North Georgia mountains. It usually occurs once a year in mid to late March, but was postponed (and lengthened) this year due to COVID shutdowns.

Thanks to the gorgeous Autumn colors, Fall is the peak season for tourism in the Georgia mountains. Although this can make it harder to find sales and deals during these months, it is an absolutely beautiful time to visit the vineyards!

  25. Tashibaarzu says:

What a nice post this is! Really enjoyable post and very helpful for planning a trip to the area in late March. You have posted about Georgia Mountains Wine Highway Week Spring 2020 and shared all the details I was wondering about. I am thankful to you for sharing this new topic with me, as it’s something that looks amazing for fun and value and a unique local experience. I know i will enjoy the week, as this part of Georgia is well known for some extraordinary qualities. Looking forward to the trip!

    • Alyce says:

The wineries are all a little bit different (from small family farms to big resorts with cabins!) so it is a nice way to get a variety of experiences all from one event.

  26. Chimmhogevagreenesnr says:

Wow🤩! Here it comes again! Kudos to the winegrowers association of Georgia for consistently putting up such an amazing show. A friend went last year and told of how member wineries and Affiliate Members each provided their own unique open-house format with many offering food and wine pairings, music, barrel and library wine tastings, discounts, and more.

It will put a big smile on my face to attend this year’s edition.

  27. Juliet says:

Thank you for sharing such an interesting article with us about Georgia mountains wine highway week Spring 2020. It has a very useful information in it and will be a very good article for anyone travelling to Georgia to read and to note that there will be busier tasting rooms during the event. Thanks so much

    • Alyce says:

Hi Juliet, The tasting rooms are definitely busier than usual during Wine Highway Week, but I’d say they are less busy during this event than they are on peak weekends in the Fall. Still, it’s a good thing to know about the crowds for those who prefer to go when they can enjoy a more relaxed pace in the tasting rooms.

  28. Rodarrick says:

Coincidentally for me, I am a big time lover of wine and I’m also currently in Georgia. Though I never knew about this before but seeing it right now makes me feel so lucky at least, I would be able to taste quality wines devoid of pollutions. Well! Though I’m here on a business assignment, I can always spare time out to visit some of these spots listed out here. Thanks

    • Alyce says:

What wonderful timing that you’ll be in the area at the right time to enjoy the 2020 Wine Highway Week! It’s a great way to see some of the most beautiful places in the Georgia mountains.

  29. muslimapapiya says:

Georgia Mountains Whine Highway is a road trip for visitors and residents too! how fun is that? for 7dream days? OMG! This seems like a great opporunity for local and mindful pleasure, canvassing with live music, food, etc. The participant was into a dream while it was been gossiping with our portal.

Must need to mention about the website. Complete view, easy to understand, comfortably inspiration all are available. Gorgeous! thank you for the dedication.

  30. Teri says:

Hi, I really enjoyed reading about this wine-tasting week. I’m researching a trip to the US for next year, and will see if we can incorporate a visit to Georgia to coincide with this week in 2021. Presumably it’s an annual event?

I particularly liked your tips for enjoying the visits – I went to a wine tasting event in Italy a few years ago and definitely didn’t have the right shoes on!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Teri, This has been an annual event in recent years so I certainly hope that it continues into the future. The participating vineyards and dates may change slightly each year, but you can generally expect a 10-day event in mid to late March that includes most of the vineyards in the North Georgia mountains.

  31. Lee says:

Wine tasting is such a fun activity. I think your travel tips are great and you have really thought of everything to be prepared and ensure for a fun and enjoyable time. The list of wineries and vineyards is pretty long. Do you have any personal recommendations or list of must visits? I would be interested in a little more information about each winery and vineyard just to make a more informed decision on which ones are the “can’t” miss.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Lee, There is additional information about each vineyard in each of the links.

Personally I think they are all worth a visit, and especially during this event when it’s so affordable. It’s hard to know what is going to resonate most with an individual, so this is a nice way to try out a bunch and find your own favorites.

If you are limited on time, I’d recommend going to the ones that are located closest to you. Some of my personal favorites include Engelheim, Serenity Cellars, Chateau Meichtry, 12 Spies Vineyards & Farm, Stonewall Creek Vineyards, and Crane Creek Vineyards… I’m looking forward to seeing if my favorites change this year!

  32. sabrinamou says:

Thank you for sharing such an incredible article with us about Georgia Mountains Wine Highway Week. A very good article with useful information (the best I have read about the event). I think this article will be very useful for anyone traveling to the Georgia Mountains. By reading your article I understand to expect busier tasting rooms during the event than at other times of the year. Though I have not visited the Ga mountains before, I am looking forward to the opportunity to visit. I must say that this article is very helpful and informative – I am going to bookmark and definitely share this article with my friends.

    • Alyce says:

This is a great event to spend with friends so hopefully you’ll find a good group of travel buddies who want to go with you!

  33. David nelson says:

Ahhh it really escape me as I have already forgotten as is already very close. For me  the  Georgia mountains wine highway week is a must attend for me.I have been attend it for sometime and I swear it one of the best public  function or gathering that I have enjoyed thanks allot for sharing this awesome article it would be of great help to the public as it has been of help to me.

    • Alyce says:

Hi David, It is certainly a fun event and a great value. I hope you enjoy the selection of vineyards that are participating in the 2020 Wine Highway Week!

  34. Anthony Hu says:

Thank you for your post. It is timely article for me. My family plan to visit family and friends in Georgia this spring. I will certainly to give tour of Georgia Mountains Wine Highway Week Spring 2020.

I like your tips for enjoying the 2020 wine highway week. I am a wine lover and my wife doesn’t like wine so much. She will be a designated driver for me and I will be free to enjoy all wine.

My wife love hiking around and I am happy to see that there are some distance to different vineyards, which she will certainly enjoy.

It is so nice that there are so many vineyards in the area. I bookmarked your webpage and will do more research to design a way to fit our family’s plan.

    • Alyce says:

Thanks so much for the bookmark. There are even more local vineyards in the Georgia mountains than the ones that participate in the wine highway week, so there is still plenty to see at any time of year!

  35. Danijel says:

Hello Alyce, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. It is great I stumbled upon it because I was in Georgia mountains several times but did not have a chance to visit these vineyards. I am surprised there are so many in just one place. It definitely will be on my map next time I go there.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Danijel, There is a lot of ground to cover but it is nice that there are groups of vineyards near each other that make for a really nice day trip… or in the case of the North Georgia Wine Highway Week, several really nice day trips!

  36. Patricia says:

Wow, I have never heard of this type of event with that many wineries so close together! Plus the scenery has to be spectacular in the Georgia mountains. It seems like a great couples or group event to do in the spring. I will look into this as a drive in the Georgia mountains would be very beautiful and pair that with a lovely wine-tasting tour to compare different wineries, that sounds totally awesome. Do you think that a weekend or 3 day tour would be enough if you have a budget on your time?

    • Alyce says:

Hi Patricia, You will be able to see a lot of vineyards in 3 days time with the Wine Highway Week Passport. It’s simply a matter of choosing your favorites and planning your trip!

  37. DorcasW says:

Hello; Georgia Mountains Highway Week interests me greatly. For persons like me traveling from outside Georgia will I be able to secure accommodation within the mountain range of wineries? From your glass marking advice, does it mean that you will hand in your glass for filling among some other glasses?

I was thinking, I would hold my glass in my hand to have the wine poured in. Whichever way, it sounds interesting! Maybe it will be late for my booking. Spring is just around the corner.

    DorcasW

    • Alyce says:

Hi Dorcas, You can definitely hold on to your glass if you choose. However, after a while, you may want to set it down and having it marked would help you identify it amongst a bunch of other identical glasses.

Lodging should be available even up until the last minute for this event.

  38. John says:

I feel lucky to have landed on this site. A vacation has been on my mind, but I usually get confused over where to spend it. I think the 2020 Georgia Wine Highway Week would be the best option here.

I have never attended any event around the Georgia mountains and I think this would be my best shot.

But you gave the opinion that visitors should attend with an ID or a proof of their age. Is this really a requirement? I mean, with all the fun there is to be had, carrying an ID with extra carefulness would dull the mood of the event.

Anyway I’m looking forward to the 20th of March!

    • Alyce says:

Hi John, If you look even a little bit too youthful, you could be denied service at the vineyards. It’s best to have your ID with you to be sure that you’ll be able to enjoy the wines. Have a great time!!

  39. Thomas S. says:

Wow, I’m definitely going to look into this.  I’m down in Florida and had no idea that Georgia had such a wine following or wine tasting such as this.  About how many people attend this even?  I saw that it was from the 20th to the 29th of March.  That is awesome!  It must be a pretty special even to run that long.  I’m gonna message some friends now and see if they are interested!  Than you for the great site and I’m glad I came about this info!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Thomas, I don’t have information on the numbers of people who attend the Georgia Wine Highway Week each year, but it’s easy to look and see that the crowds are about double what they normally are at that time of year! It’s definitely nice to have so much time to visit the wineries!

  40. Steve says:

This looks like such a fun thing to do with a group or spouse! Though I don’t drink, my wife really enjoys wine tastings and visiting wineries! This would be really cool to do with her sometime. It’s crazy how many wineries are so close together. You really do have to be careful to keep a clear head if you are going to hit more than a couple in one day. Though my wife never goes overboard, it would be a good thing I would be the designated driver. Thanks for letting me know about this event!

  41. Puccini says:

As a wine lover myself, I have been on many a wine tours and event but this event is just the cherry on the cake. So many vineyards and so little time. It is definitely a must. I am making a note in my diary to ensure that I attend. I might not make it this year but your site is on my radar and I will be registering for your events in the future.

Thanks for a great website, keep it up.

    Regards Tania

    • Alyce says:

Hi Tania, It is an annual event so making plans for a future year is also a great idea. The dates move around a bit, but it generally includes the last couple of full weekends in March.

  42. Benny says:

Hi, it is a great and nice feeling to know that someone will create a great website like this and also create a write up on a fun adult event like this one. I don’t think I am going to miss this Georgia mountains wine highway week for anything. I am already getting my stuffs set up. Thank you for this info and the handy map!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Benny, The map is definitely a helpful planning tool as it takes multiple days to visit all of the participating North Georgia mountain wineries!

  43. shariful islam says:

Many thanks to you for sharing such an excellent article with us.

Last year I visited Georgia during my office vacations and the outdoor space is beautiful and it is a more mountainous area than expected. I love these mountains and have made me feel good. The roads leading to its mountains seem can be scary / exciting. But the mountains in Georgia are so beautiful and so high that they look so beautiful. This wine highway event sounds like a great way to enjoy some of the rural mountain areas and local flavor.

  44. Travis says:

Wow, I had never heard about this event! I was totally unaware that Georgia had such an extensive vineyard collection. I have been to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, and going to Napa Valley in California is on my bucket list, but this seems to be a little more affordable and closer to me. Is Georgia known for a particular wine varietal or are there plenty to choose from? I completely agree with you on only seeing 3-4 vineyards a day, by the 4th one it can get tough to remember much! I made that mistake in Oregon!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Travis, These Georgia mountain vineyards have a lot to offer and each winery is going to do something a little different. The great thing about the wine highway is that it will usually give each winery a chance to highlight 4 or 5 of their best wines for new customers! It’s a great way to sample the wide variety of wine in the mountains.

  45. Eric Seil says:

Thanks for writing a nice preview of Georgia Mountains Wine Highway Week. I wasn’t aware of this event until reading the post. Certainly, it’s something I’ll consider going to.

The list of vineyards and wineries are unique. I’ve heard of some of them before, and they’re great wineries.

I’ll pass on this post to my parents. They’re huge wine-lovers, and maybe we’ll make a trip out of it. It sure would be fun to travel and meet new people.

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading this article!

Hi Eric, I’ve visited many of these places with my parents and these mountains wineries and vineyards have become some of their favorites too. This is a great place to visit and a great deal and excuse to drive around this beautiful area!!

    Thank you Alyce,

This will be my first visit, but the way you highlighted things make me feel it is a no miss event, I cannot wait to have a good taste of this various wine and visit vinyards on the mountain. I love the way you highlighted my the things expected for us to take along, this is helpful for first timers

    • Alyce says:

Hi there! The annual wine highway week is a great way to enjoy the beautiful Georgia mountains and the first days of Spring!

  47. Travis says:

    Oh this sounds like fun!

Definitely agree tho that you should have a sober driver and listen to everything else you’re advising here. I can only imagine how dangerous it can be with people (some more intoxicated than others) walking around everywhere. Especially up in the mountains of Georgia.

Nonetheless it would be a great time!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Travis, It is definitely a great event to attend but just a little bit of advance planning can make it even better. 🙂

  48. Rhain says:

Seems like this years edition would be the kicker. I have say though, the tips you shared would definitely go a long way. Of course, a clear head for the road. I think it might be better as per your recommendation, if the driver for excursions is sober altogether. I also think the comfy shoes would come in handy. I just hope more wineries are added before the due date.

    Regards

    • Alyce says:

Hi Rhain, There were 2 more wineries added today, and hopefully the full (and lengthy) list of participating wineries will be shared soon!

Thanks a lot for sharing with us such an amazing article about Georgia Mountains Wine highway Week Spring 2020.

I would love to take part in the Georgia Mountains Wine highway Week event. It would be an opportunity for me to make new friends, meet a new world and taste that wine.

Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing article with us. Good luck!

    • Alyce says:

Hi Razvanllie, You are right that it is a great way to make new friends, as there are lots of friendly people attending and it’s easy to strike up a conversation about the great wines, weather, and scenery! I hope to see you there!!

This honestly sounds like heaven, quality wines from over 20 vineyards just sound like too good of an offer to turn down. I am yet to travel to the US and the idea of travelling through Georgia just sounds so up my street, I love visiting places in general so I am sure this would be great for me.

However, since I’m 20 and from the UK I will how to catch the next one. Is this an annual event as I would love to make it in 2021?

    Thanks,

    Josh

    • Alyce says:

Hi Joshua, This has been an annual event for many years now, so we will cross our fingers that it will continue into the future!

  51. Donny says:

I think the Georgia mountains wine highway week event is a great time one can share with friends and family members that are of drinking age and you can get to meet new people. Apart from that we’ll also get to enjoy some new tastes and no doubt these vineyards will be giving their very best. Aren’t there some non alcohol wines to test there just in case I have a friend who doesn’t drink strong stuff? Thanks for the heads up and update I’m definitely looking forward to this event.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Donny, that is a great question. The vineyards do allow visitors of all ages (even kids!), but guests must be at least 21 years old to enjoy the wines. Many of them do offer other options including local craft beer, wine slushies, or soft drinks. You can check with the each vineyard to learn more about their offerings!

      Regards, Alyce

  53. Antonio says:

    Hi

To me it sounds like a heavenly delight of  mixing travel with wine. I really do like vising wineries, to see what they have to offer in the way of new wines  and the types of grapes that they are using. You have explained the itinerary very well, emphasising that not  all vineyards will be on it. The passport system is a good one and most certainly reward those who are dedicated enough to do the whole tour. The only trouble I can see is the drink driving concerns I have. If you even have a glass of wine and you visit the 3 or 4 places that you recommend, you can be over the drink drive limit. My question would be is there a way you go around the wineries and vineyard without relying on a car, especially if you do want to drink?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • Alyce says:

Hi Antonio, You are right to be concerned about driving after a trip to the Georgia vineyards. Most of these vineyards are located in rural areas and are not close to each other, so you would need a driver or to hire an group excursion / tour bus to get to them.

There are a couple of wineries that are close to small towns where you could stay. If you happen to be staying in Tiger, you could walk to Tiger Mountain Vineyards. If you are staying in Helen, then Habersham Winery could be a fun option.

Also, there are a handful of vineyards that have lodging available on site

However, to fully take advantage of all of the vineyards that participate in Wine Highway Week, you will need transportation to travel those distances.

      Hope that helps!

  54. Richard says:

Wow! That looks like 10 days of heaven.

Great article appeals to both my head and heart, as long as I’m not the designated driver!

Have you done one of these tours yourself?

Does Georgia export wines? I’m UK based and see most US wines from California.

Loved the tips section as well. Really helpful.

    • Alyce says:

Hi Richard, I definitely enjoy visiting the wineries for both the wine and the natural beauty of the vineyards. Wines can be ordered and shipped from many of the vineyards — I am a member of 2 wine clubs that regularly ship selections to their members (Frogtown Cellars and Wolf Mountain Vineyards).

The USA rules for shipping wine vary by state (some allow it while others do not), but I am not sure about whether or not they are allowed to (or choose to) export their wines directly to customers.

I did the full Wine Highway Week tour in 2018 and found it to be a fantastic experience and value. I highly recommend it to everyone!!

Some great tips here – you’ve obviously done this sort of thing a lot! Having a designated driver each day is obviously very important, as is not relying on wine to keep you hydrated (bad idea). I love your suggestion of wine glass markers or charms – that hadn’t occurred to me before but clearly makes a lot of sense, plus having a handy stain remover pen, especially important when tasting red wines. Great article, thanks for sharing.

    • Alyce says:

Thanks so much for your kind words. Having a driver is an important part of having a safe and fun trip to wine country. Since this is a multi-day event, it would be fairly easy for a group to alternate drivers on different days so that everyone gets to enjoy the wine. 🙂

Thank you very much for giving us this wonderful article about Wine Highway week in the Georgia Mountains. My father produces over 100L of red wine every year and I want to say that this passion has been passed on to the whole family. We have read on the Internet a lot of interesting things about this event and this year we even decided to visit and be present here. We would like to visit Chateau Meichtry but we would like to stay several days and we have a problem finding a place to stay overnight. What could you recommend? I would really appreciate your help. Thanks again and wish you all the best!
